How to Choose a Trade School in Sacramento
Learning how to choose a trade school starts with checking the credential you need for the work you want. For Sacramento campuses, compare official approval records, published results, total charges and the hours you can attend.
Key points
- Check the campus and program against the right official records.
- Compare results for the same credential, reporting year and student group.
- Request the complete class, lab and clinical schedule before paying.
Verify a private school's California authorization
Use the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) records. Match the school's name, location and program.

Open BPPE's Approved Schools page, then follow the school search. BPPE says you can search by name, location or program type. Compare the record with the Sacramento area campus you plan to attend and check the effective date. Contact BPPE if you cannot resolve a mismatch.
Under the California Private Postsecondary Education Act, approval to operate concerns authorization and minimum operating standards. It does not represent a state recommendation. The Act also contains exemptions, so a missing record needs an explanation from BPPE. Use the agency's student resources to find disciplinary actions and other school information.
Separate school accreditation from program accreditation
Institutional accreditation covers a school. Programmatic accreditation reviews a particular field or program within it.

The U.S. Department of Education's aid handbook explains these two types of accreditation. Ask which agency accredits the institution and whether a separate agency covers your course of study. Write down both names, the credential and the campus.
Check the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs (DAPIP). California's Office of Student Assistance and Relief directs students there to verify accreditation. Review the CHEA accreditation resources if you need help understanding the terms. Then ask the licensing board or exam provider which program accreditation, if any, your intended occupation requires. A school logo alone does not answer that question.
Find the approval tied to your field
For licensed work, use the relevant regulator's list. Check the actual training location and current status.

For nurse assistant or phlebotomy study, check the California Department of Public Health's CNA training list or phlebotomy school list. For LVN programs, BVNPT directs you to DCA License Search using the license type Vocational Nurse Approved Program.
For beauty and barber courses, use the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology's applicant page and linked school list. The board says hours from non-approved schools do not qualify for its exam. For electrician trainee study, check the DIR school list. For CDL training, follow FMCSA's entry-level training guidance to the Training Provider Registry. Resolve an inactive status, address difference or training-type mismatch with the regulator before enrolling.
Read outcomes with their dates and definitions
Completion, licensing exam results and earnings measure different things. Ask which students each figure includes.

Use College Scorecard to review available costs, graduation rates, debt and earnings. Search the institution and, where available, the field of study and credential. Check the reporting group and year before comparing numbers. A result for the whole institution may not describe the Sacramento program you want.
For vocational nursing, BVNPT publishes program exam pass rates, including numbers tested and percentages passed. Read those together. BPPE's student page also links School Performance Fact Sheets with graduation and job outcomes. Ask how the school defines a related job and which graduates were counted. Use past results to guide questions, not to predict your own job or pay.
Test the schedule against your working week
Check class, lab, clinical and travel time separately. A course label may leave out hours that affect your job or family.

Ask for the calendar for your exact start, including offsite training and required attendance. Put each meeting on your weekly schedule. Check travel time from Elk Grove, Roseville or your own starting point to every location, not just the main campus.
American River College's Spring 2027 CNA page illustrates why this matters: it publishes separate lecture, lab and offsite clinical hours, with clinical days starting earlier. Ask any school advertising evening, weekend or hybrid study when hands-on sessions occur. Find out how absences, missed clinical hours and make-up sessions affect completion before arranging child care or changing your shifts.
Bring a written question list to admissions
Leave with the documents needed to compare your choices. Take time to read them before signing an agreement.

Ask for the current catalog, enrollment agreement, fee schedule, refund terms and any published outcome sheet. California's private school law addresses enrollment disclosures and School Performance Fact Sheets. Use those documents to ask specific questions:
- What credential will I receive, and what exam comes next?
- Are prerequisites or extra courses outside the quoted program?
- What is the full charge for tuition, supplies and exams?
- Who arranges the clinical placement or externship?
- What happens if a required class is canceled or I must stop?
Record the answers for each campus. Use the paying for trade school guide to check funding separately, and request written confirmation of any change to the published terms.
Common questions
Is BPPE authorization the same as accreditation?
These checks answer different questions. California's private school law defines approval to operate and sets minimum standards. The Education Department describes accreditation of institutions and individual programs. Verify the campus's authorization and its named accreditor separately, then check any licensing board approval needed for your field.
How do I check a Sacramento LVN school's approval?
Follow BVNPT's approved-program instructions to DCA License Search. Select Vocational Nurse Approved Program and match the school and location. Read the current status, then ask the board about anything unclear. Exam pass rates are useful additional information, but they do not replace checking the approval record.
Does a high exam pass rate mean everyone finishes?
An exam result describes the people included in that test report. BVNPT's tables show how many candidates tested and the percentage who passed. Ask separately how many students started and completed the program. Check the year and group behind both figures before using them to compare your options.
What schedule details should I ask for if I work?
Request the full calendar for your cohort, with class, lab, clinical and externship hours. ARC's CNA page shows that offsite clinical days can start earlier than lectures. Ask about attendance rules and make-up options, then allow for travel and child care at each required location.
